Since we are an organic farm we like to make some of our own food for our plants. Composting is a big part of this. We recycle green waste, brown waste, decomposing fruit and other organic (live) material from around the farm, fish, paper and compost from our own kitchens. And since a lot of our own cooking is using items from our own garden now (herbs, chayote squash and other vegetables, fruit, etc.) we are completing a growth cycle in its entirety! Very exciting!

We are moving to a larger scale composting system where we will monitor its progress closely, recording its temperature regularly and working with it to keep it within HOFA and other formal organic farming standards for commercial compost. We will also use some rinsed seaweed which is apparently in abundance at the perimeter of the island!

The compost will become heated as is gives off energy during its decomposition. Upon completion, when it is decomposed it will look like fine soil and smell wonderfully fresh! We then spread it to the plants asking for it.
